Cleaning and Caring for Limestone

Limestone counter top photoLimestone can be used for countertop applications, backsplashes, flooring, and showers. Because it is porous always make sure that limestone is properly sealed before using in these interior applications. It is extremely important to remember, that limestone is highly reactive to acids so always use a pH balanced cleaning product. Limestone is partially soluble, especially in acid, so never use any acidic cleaner such as vinegar, orange, or lemon based products. Not only will the acids infiltrate the surface of the limestone causing it to etch and blur, it will also eat away at the grout used to hold the limestone in place. Over time, the use of acids on limestone will be obvious and usually irreversible without the assistance of an expert. Limestone should always be cleaned with a natural stone specific cleaner that ensures safe ingredients are being used that will not harm the limestone.

Cleaning Limestone Countertops and Tile Surfaces

Always use a pH balanced daily cleaner when cleaning limestone. Always consider a 100% naturally derived and nontoxic cleaner. These cleaners are better for our environment and will insure the longevity of the limestone. Using a stone cleaner that contains IoSeal properties will fill the porous surface, helping to keep staining agents from infiltrating the stones surface. Using preventative measures with natural stone is key.

What is Limestone:

Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed of the minerals calcite and/or aragonite. The grain that limestone is composed of are mostly skeletal fragments of marine organisms, such as coral. Limestone makes up about ten percent of the total volume of all sedimentary rock. At its purest form, limestone is either white or off-white, but changes color because of impurities such as sand, organic remains, clay, and iron oxide. Because of its coloring and texture, this stone is popular for use in natural stone backsplashes, as well as accents in natural stone floors.
